Magarao was one of the three (3) municipalities recently awarded as national winner in the search for Zero Basura Olympics Philippine Garbology Marathon under the 4th to 6th class category. The search was spearheaded by the  Department  of Environment  and  Natural Resources (DENR) held in  Malacañang Palace, Manila on April 24,2010.

      President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assisted by DENR Sec. Horacio C. Ramos, presented the plaque of recognition, a medal and P300,000 cash to Mayor Nelson B. Julia during the awarding ceremony.  Mayors, municipal official/employees from 92 cities and municipalities nationwide and representatives of NGAs attended the activity.

      This award/citation was in addition to the award of excellence received by  Mayor  Julia  for  the  implementation of Solid Waste Management Program which was given by the League of Municipal Mayors (LMP). -- LGOO V Tessie A. Abiera
